About Year of the Monkey

Year of the Monkey specializes in the hard to find items.  While we carry lines from some of Beijing's prominent manufacturers, our passion lies in seeking, finding, and procuring the old cabinet with the original finish intact, the Buddha statue with the perfectly serene face, or the assorted trinkets that, frankly, we can't quite identify at first glance but to which we are nonetheless drawn. Our expertise in navigating Asian markets, and our keen design sense, means that our collection of unique items, taken together, create a sense of peace and elegance that we don't find elsewhere.

Proprietor Hunter Marshall opened the doors to Year of the Monkey in late 2004, seeing the opportunities to introduce his aesthetic sense to Seattle. He's always looking for new buying opportunities in Asia, but frankly has a difficult time finding the quality and character of our existing product lines.
